Its basically finished!
22 07 2008Just had a great weekend away at the house for the long weekend, and the house is fast becoming a home. Now that the tatami is in place the old house is finished as well.
Along with that are various aspects of the change from a project to a home. Alert readers will notice may notice that this entry replaces an earlier one. Many reasons for that!
As mentioned this project has now turned into Di's home and along with that comes certain changes. We are working through them and I'm really confident the adjustments will work.
I started and almost finished the new screening for the private bathroom garden. As had been commented by certain parties in the area the bathroom was very 'visible' and the big round windows is clear glass, so until then we had to protect the view with the reeds that were going to be there.
It was so much fun for me. I could get to use all my tools that I've collected and do something with them!
I had purchased a rather cheap rechargable drill set and after using the drill just a little realised that um quality does count here. So I had purchased a much more expensive Hitachi cordless drill. Its fantastic and I really love it! Its probably up in the 'professional' area of tools, but has great torque an charge and had no issues driving a masonary bit. At the end the cheap bit wore out first and I'll need to get another the same size! So overall its worked out okay. I have a huge range of reasonable drill bits etc and a great drill to use them with. I really do like this drill, and the cool bit is that with a simple change of powerpack I can take it home with me.
After talking with Di we changed the approach I was going to take on attaching the reed screens to putting along two strips of thing board which are attached to the brick walls, and then the reeds are attached to that with thin stips of wood. The wood onto the wall was easy but I was worried about the thin strips holding the reeds on. They are very thin and will be covered by decorative half bamboo. After digging in the wood pile, I found the off cuts from the bathroom walls which are actually plywood in construction so very strong, no splitting and are built for damp conditions. It ended up being a great way to do it as the screen is attached really strongly to the wall and looks okay from the outside (more to do with the wall needed finishing) and from the inside looks brillant as the concrete wall has gone and there is full privacy in the whole house from it!
Most of the pics are on the site now, and I will say I'm really delighted with how it looks, and knowing I did it is a very satisfactory feeling!
