Back from the big Build
14 05 2008Kitching before and after are now ready!
Firstly there will be a number of new entires written behind this entry to fill in the last six days. Its been an incredible experience being onsite during such an important phase of the building. Before this both of us were just remote and turning up during weekends and other days away (Di more than me). Our advanced planning did sorta account for this and we knew these six days would be the most critical of it all as the structure was basically finished and the detailing and installing of kitchen and bathroom were going in.
In many ways thinking about it of all the house builds (in general) these are two of the most complex area's and it was excellant our schedules allowed us this time to be there. The bathroom is still some time away, and I think we are now calling it bathrooom version 6.2, and I don't joke we actually did put version numbers on it as its just becoming a nightmare of sorting it all out. The design itself is actually very simple, well so we thought, but add in tiling and suddenly its the biggest nightmare. Read the earlier material to get an idea of it.
I'll use this entry just to say that after 3 days we actually go the kitchen in and its looking really good. Won't say it was easy. There are a couple of things we would like to talk to Japan IKEA about, but our carpenters got most of it sorted out. But what an effort! In many ways I think it would have been easier for us to have done alot of the DIY on the IKEA ourselves. But part of that is I've had experience before in putting together IKEA stuff before and using that experience (hard earned I guess) in this project.
The instructions for putting together the actuall IKEA stuff is very well illustrated in graphical language, which means is language independant, or at least you would hope. To be very honest the graphical instructions from IKEA are excellant, but you do need to take some time to read them carefully and put them into order. A small thing I noticed that IKEA Japan could take into account is that here in Japan you read the manual from final page to first page. (I'm trying to write that very carefully as for a European person we read from the first page to the last, but its not wrong to read the other way either, and I'm quite happy with local mags working that way!). oh thats western style first page to final page.
If you have never come across books/magazines like that I guess you don't know what I'm talking about. (Western style book spine on the left, eastern book style spine on the right!).
I'll cover this summary entry off with that it all actually worked. There were many difficult moments during it, but we managed to work them all out. The pics will show it all. And now at the end of the six days of being onsite I'm so happy that it all looks like we planned. Both of us are totally happy with the result. Its going to be at least another 2 weeks before we can show you the 'final' photo's but when you see the progress I think you will hopefully agree its on track.
